Elderhostel Programs
SFCC offers one-week and three-day residential, educational programs for seniors during January, February, and April. Program participants are housed at the historic Hotel Jacaranda in Avon Park, the historic Kenilworth Lodge in Sebring, or the Lake Placid Conference Center in Lake Placid. Programs are built around themes and include a wide array of trips, classes and enriching activities. Discover how the unique Lake Wales Ridge environment has created a diverse ecosystem that supports plants and animals existing no place else in the world. Hike a nature trail to see the endangered flora and fauna of an ancient sand scrub. Climb aboard a pontoon boat and view wetland habitats on the restored Kissimmee River, seeing it as it looked centuries ago. Ride a tram through hammock, scrub, long-leaf pine, and cypress swamp ecosystems, experiencing Florida’s frontier. Explore historic Sebring, the “City on the Circle”, searching for Sears homes and the restored buildings surrounding the Sebring Historical Society Museum. Step back in time to pioneer days and hear a Cracker Cowboy’s tales, spun with humor and poetic license. |

Grab your paintbrush and learn how to paint a mural, whether to enhance a wall in your home or to decorate a building in your town. Gain hands-on instruction from a seasoned mural painter, and learn how to tackle a mural project from inception to completion. Novice painters and experienced artists work together to create a 4’ by 8’ mural during class. Everyone creates a small project to take home and show with pride. |

Discover the wonderful world of clowning and bring smiles, laughter, and love to young and old. In this intensive program, you will learn clown makeup techniques, costuming, and clown character development. Practice face painting, balloon sculpturing, and clown movement, while becoming immersed in the history and philosophy of clowning. The staff of the Clown College, under the auspices of the Toby the Clown Foundation, Inc., will conduct a complete clown program for both experienced and novice clowns. Enjoy an excursion to the Toby the Clown Foundation, Inc., Museum and Clown Honor Wall of Fame, in Lake Placid, Fla. Showcase your new skills in makeup, costume, moves, and timing through skits and antics on the last day of a fun-filled week. |
Three-day / three night programs, called Snapshots, are held in April. These Programs give participants an opportunity to sample the Elderhostel experience in less time. Snapshots are similar to the traditional programs and are packed with trips and adventures.

Hike with a ranger through a scrub habitant, seeking the elusive scrub jay and gopher tortoise. Experience a working farm/vineyard, sampling the glorious scuppernong and muscadine grapes, while feasting on juicy, ripe strawberries grown hydroponically. Spend a morning in the state park that houses the Civilian Conservation Corps (C.C.C.) museum. Immerse yourself in the daily life of the C.C.C., and hear their stories firsthand. Ride a tram through hammock, scrub, long-leaf pine, and cypress swamp ecosystems, experiencing Florida’s frontier. Share an artist’s perspective of the Lake Wales Ridge portrayed in a selection of woodcuts that bring to life the delicate and unique flora that abounds here. Envision the life of Florida’s cow hunters through the tales spun by a Florida Cracker cowboy poet. |
