An Illinois native, but a long-time Florida resident, Dr. Norm Stephens was appointed as president of South Florida State College in August of 2002. He began his career in 1968 at St. Petersburg College as a member of the faculty in the Department of Natural Sciences where he taught chemistry and other mathematics and science courses. In more than 40 years in higher education, he has held a number of administrative positions including presidencies at three colleges in Illinois, Michigan, and Florida.
After graduating from Fort Lauderdale High School, Dr. Stephens pursued his higher education at the University of Florida where he earned Bachelor of Science and master’s degrees and was awarded a doctoral fellowship in interdisciplinary science education earning his Doctorate in June of 1971.
Dr. Stephens is married to Laurie Stephens, a retired elementary school teacher who taught at the Kindergarten Learning Center in Highlands County and a graduate of St. Petersburg College and the University of South Florida. They have four grown children, and all of them attended community colleges before pursuing their baccalaureate and advanced professional degrees.
