What is the Career Academy at SFCC?

The Career Academy at SFCC is an entire learning experience on the SFCC Highlands Campus. You’ll attend high school classes, taught by high school instructors, during one half of the day. During the other half of the day, you’ll attend college-level classes alongside other college students.

Administrative Secretary

The Secretarial/Administrative Assistant Certificate Program prepares the student for an office occupation such as typist, payroll clerk, accounts payable/ accounts receivable clerk, word processor, receptionist, file clerk, general office clerk, secretary, or administrative assistant. Course content includes, but is not limited to, accounting (elective), payroll, business English, business communications, keyboarding, introduction to business trends, office machines, transcription, fundamental basic office procedures, introduction to computers, work relations, and interpersonal skills. Students who receive the Secretarial/Administrative Assistant certificate may receive up to 30 credits toward an A.A.S. degree in General Secretarial, Office Systems Technology. Air Conditioning, Refrigeration and Heating

The Air Conditioning, Refrigeration, and Heating Technology Certificate Program prepares the student for employment as a technician or repair person of home and commercial air conditioning and refrigeration systems. Course content includes, but is not limited to, the fundamentals of refrigeration, basic electricity, and heating systems.


Automotive Collision Repair

The Automotive Collision Repair and Refinishing Occupational Certificate Program prepares the student for employment in the auto collision repair and refinishing industry as a repair technician or an auto collision painter. Course content includes, but is not limited to, fundamentals of auto body repair, basic sheet metal repair, painting techniques, science of unibody repair, and panel repair and replacement.


Automotive Service Technology

The Automotive Service Technology Occupational Certificate Program prepares the student to enter the automotive service industry as a technician. Course content includes, but is not limited to, brake systems, steering, suspension, manual and automatic transmissions, automotive heating and airconditioning, electrical systems, and engine repair.


Computer Electronics Technology

The Computer Electronics Technology Certificate Program prepares students for employment as technicians in computer service/support related businesses and industries. Course content includes, but is not limited to AC circuits, DC circuits, PC support/service/repair of hardware, software, network communications and digital devices.


Computer Networking

This Network Support Services Program is designed to prepare students for employment as Network Support Help Desk, Network Support Specialist, Network Administrator, and to provide continuing workforce development for persons previously or currently employed in any of these occupations.


Cosmetology

The Cosmetology Program prepares the student to sit for the Florida State Board of Cosmetology examination, and for entry level employment in the cosmetology profession. Activities involve the use of a modern, well equipped, school operated salon. During the first 200 hours of the program, students perform laboratory services on manikins and each other. After completion of 200 hours, laboratory services are performed on local patrons as well as other students. Course content includes, but is not limited to, hair design, chemical re-formation, hair sculpturing, chromatics, histology of hair, skin, nails, nail care, skin care, and make-up.


Drafting

The Drafting and Design Technology Program prepares the student for a career as an assistant to architects, engineers, manufacturers, or building contractors. The drafting and design technician translates ideas, sketches, or written specifications into working drawings. Course content includes, but is not limited to, communication skills; leadership skills; human relations and employability skills; safe and efficient work practices; drafting standards; math skills and drafting office practices to assist mechanical, electrical, and electronic, architectural, chemical, civil, or other engineers in the design and drafting of electrical circuits, machines, structures, and architectural plans.


Electronics

The Electronics Technology Certificate Program prepares the student for employment as a technician in electronics related businesses and industries. Course content includes, but is not limited to, A.C. and D.C. circuits, solid state devices, analog circuits, digital devices, and microprocessing.


Medical Secretary

The Medical Secretary Program provides training and technical skills necessary to attain entry-level employment as a medical administrative assistant, medical secretary, medical office clerk, or receptionist. Instruction is offered in such areas as communication, medical terminology, keyboarding, calculators, business skills, and computing. A work experience component is included with the degree and certificate programs. Employability skills such as customer service, interviewing, problem solving, setting priorities, critical thinking, and teamwork are emphasized.
