Step 1: Apply to South Florida State College
If you are not currently enrolled in SFSC, complete these requirements through the SFSC Admissions Office. If you are a current student, proceed to Step 2: the EMT-Basic Program Application.
Complete the General Student Application to South Florida State College and pay the non-refundable application fee.
Submit the official transcript from each college in which you attended credit courses.
Meet with an SFSC advisor to complete the Public Safety Referral Form.
Step 2: Application and Portfolio Requirements
Consult the Schedule of Classes for application deadlines.
Download and complete the Firefighter II Supplemental Application Packet, which must include all of the following items:
Legible copy of a legal document (driver’s license, passport, etc.) for proof of age in accordance with FS 633.412 (1)(a).
A complete Medical Assessment form in accordance with FS 633.412 (1)(e). Firefighting is physically demanding and stressful career field. Many fire departments require significant health and physical ability testing prior to, and continued employment. These requirements are unique to each individual agency. The National Fire Protection Agency (NFPA) has published guidelines for firefighter health and safety NFPA 1582.
Signed affidavit concerning the use of tobacco in accordance with FS 633.412 (1)(f).
Certificate of completion (or official transcript from the Bureau of Fire Standards and Training) of a 206 hour Firefighter I course compliant with the most recent FAC 69A-37 standards. Applicants are required to disclose their FCDICE number for verification of training. Completion of this training prior to Jan. 1, 2013, may not meet this standard. Contact the Bureau of Fire Standards and Training for questions regarding current Firefighter I Portfolio requirements. Firefighter I Portfolio requirements are:
Certificate of completion Emergency Medical Responder (EMR) or First Responder, in accordance with the Federal Department of Transportation (FDOT), National Registry of EMTs (NREMT), or Florida Department of Education (FDOE). You may also show proof of completion of Emergency Medical Technician or Paramedic courses.

Program Acceptance Policies
Applicants are notified via email affirming the date and time the Firefighter II application was successful submitted.
Prior to the application deadline posted in the SFSC’s current Schedule of Class, pay $35 for the required background check. SFSC will submit fingerprints to FDLE and the FBI for the background check as required by FS 633.412 (1)(c) .
Contact the Fire Science program administrative office to schedule a fingerprint appointment. Applicants who do not meet the statutory requirements of this section are denied access to the Firefighter II course without refund.
The date for the mandatory program orientation is sent to those selected for the next scheduled Firefighter II course. Failure to attend forfeits acceptance and places the applicant on the waiting list.
Applicants not accepted are placed on a waiting list. Those on the waiting list are encouraged to attend orientation in the event accepted applicants do not meet the criteria.
