Independent Study Policy

Business Technologies Department Independent Study Policy

The purpose of independent study is to assist SFCC students in meeting their educational goals.  The business technologies department does not offer independent study to transient students.

SFCC offers two kinds of independent study.

1.  Directed Independent Study (DIS) is offered to meet needs not otherwise addressed.

· These courses will be published in the schedule of classes and are typically only offered through in this manner.

· As a rule, only full time faculty will offer these classes.

2.  Special Independent Study (SIS) is a way to complete an existing course through independent study. An SIS is permitted* when a course was canceled due to insufficient enrollment**, the student is unable to register for a needed course because of documented reasons beyond the student’s control***, or the student is in his/her last term and a course required for graduation is not offered****. (per catalog)

· This type on independent study should be offered as a last resort when all other options have been exhausted.

· As a rule, only full time faculty will be given these assignments.

*Permitted means allowable, not required to be given

**Canceling a course due to insufficient enrollment does not automatically entitle a student to take the course via independent study.  Every effort should be made to find the student another course.

* Is there another course the student needs being offered during the term?

* If the cancelled course is required for their degree and/or certificate, is there a substitute course that the student could take?

***Documented reason beyond the student’s control

* Careful judgment of the circumstance is required on a case-by-case basis.

****The student is in his/her last term and a course required for graduation is not offered.

* The probability of this could be reduced with proper planning on the part of the student.

* Look for substitutions before considering independent study.
