The job outlook for dental assisting in Florida and nationally is excellent.  Graduates will find work in general and specialty dental practices, research programs, professional educational programs, community, state, and federal health centers, hospitals, institutions that care for the elderly or disabled persons, prisons, dental products promotion, Federal programs such as VA hospitals and the armed services.

In the state-of-the-art Dental Education Center, students will learn:

· Patient-assistant and assistant-dentist relationships with emphasis on communication and professional skills and ethical roles.

· Principles of infection control and OSHA standards for blood-borne pathogens.

· Pathology of plaque, plaque control, polishing techniques, and desensitization of root surfaces.

· Conventional and digital radiography and interpretation of diagnostic radiographs.

· Dental Office management and emergencies.

· The dental assistant’s legal roles and expanded duties.

 

Text Box: Requirements for the Dental Assisting Program:
*This is a limited admissions program with specific requirements.

1. Achieve a high school diploma or GED.
2. Verification from a licensed dentist or dental hygienist , substantiating completion of at least 16 hours of observation, volunteer service, or work experience.  
3. College Entrance Test (SFCC Testing Center 863784-7214):
	a. Students must have appropriate minimum college placement testing scores for the CPT, 	ACT, or SAT,
	b. OR, Students must have already taken and passed Freshman English I (ENC 1101) and/or 	Prep Algebra (MAT 0024) with a grade of a “C” or higher,
	c. OR, have an Associate in Arts degree or higher.
4. Applicants must demonstrate competency in basic computer skills in one of three ways:
	a. Have a passing grade in a computer course on a high school transcript
	b. Earn a “C” or better in a computer course at the college level
	c. Take Introduction to Microcomputers during the Dental Assisting Program
5. A completed application for the Dental Assisting Program. (A separate application is required for admission to the College.)
