Paris to the Pyrenees travel and Humanities 2710
Course Schedule: Week I (Jan. 8): Introduction to trip and Humanities concepts/assignments Class: handout on the outline of artistic and historical periods and handout of bibliography of suggested readings; choice of one is required. Assignment: 1. Select a book from the book list (French or Spanish literature, or novels concerned with art and humanities), read, and prepare a short summary report (approx. 300-500 words) to share in class. Due: Jan. 29 or Feb. 5 2. Select a cathedral (bring picture of and prepare 300- 500 words description and history. Due: Jan. 22 List of cathedrals: Chartres Cathedral, Saint-Denis Church, in Paris: Notre-Dame, Sainte-Chapelle, and Cathedrals of Barcelona and Madrid.
Week II (Jan. 15 –Martin Luther Holiday)
Week III (Jan. 22): Medieval history of France and Spain, crusades, castles, and cathedrals. Class: 1. Review dates of Middle Ages, trends in religious and philosophical thoughts during this time. 2. Have students fill in time table. 3. Look at examples of Cathedrals; student presentations. 4. View DVD: Gothic Cathedrals. Assignment: 1. Find a book on Italian Renaissance or Baroque artist, or print out information from the Internet about the Louvre’s collection and bring to share. 2. Prepare a 300-500 words on any famous Renaissance work of art from Louvre. Due: Jan. 22
Week IV (Jan. 29): Renaissance and High Renaissance, perspective and the Louvre. Class: Handout on perspective. View video of the Louvre. First night of book presentations and presentation on famous work from the Louvre. Assignment: 1. Draw one point and two point perspective, record images as video on the Louvre is played 2. Prepare for second night of book presentations. 3. Find a book or internet source on one of the Spanish artists to share in class.
Week V (Feb. 5): Baroque, El Greco, Velasquez and Goya and the Prado Class: Presentation on Spanish art and the Prado. Second group of book presentations. Assignment: Write a 300-500 word paper on one of the Spanish artists due Feb.12
Week VI (Feb. 12):18th to 19th century Rococo, Neoclassical, and Romantic periods Class: Time for anyone to share Spanish art or artists before turning in paper. Present an overview of the art, architecture and music of Rococo, Neoclassical or Romantic. View DVD: Art of Paris. Assignment: Research an Impressionist or Postimpressionist artist; write a 300-500 word paper. Have an example of artist’s work. Due Feb. 19
*Week VII (Feb. 19)- 19th to 20th century French Impressionist and Postimpressionist artists Class: 1. Lecture with slides or images of French Impressionists and Postimpressionists. 2. Impressionist and Postimpressionist artist’s presentations. View DVD: French Impressionism at the D'Orsay. Assignment: Research a contemporary Spanish or French artist of late 1900s to today and write a 300-500 word paper with at least one visual example. Bring money if ordering Euros.
*Week VIII (Feb. 26)- 20th to 21st century art and culture; preparation for travel. Class: 1. Language, French and Spanish cultural uniqueness and differences. 2. Spanish artist’s presentations. Assignment: Start packing! Bring copies made from passports/ IDs by March 5.
Week IX ( Mar. 5)- Museum experience and historical sights to be visited Class: 1. Last minute preparations and information concerns sights to be visited. 2. How to write, note take, and document time in the museums and monuments to be visited. 3. Collect all copies of passports and IDs. 4. Collect your euros and any documentation to be handed out. Assignment: Take final itinerary with hotels and numbers to make copies and leave at home. Be on time to meet vans!
Assignments: Jan. 2215- 300-500 word paper on a French or Spanish cathedral. Jan. 29- 300-500 word paper on any famous Renaissance work from the Louvre. Jan. 29 or Feb. 5- 300-500 word paper on selected literature that you read. Feb. 12- 300-500 word paper on Spanish Baroque artist. Feb. 19- 300-500 word paper on French Impressionists or Postimpressionists. Feb. 26- 300-500 word paper on contemporary French or Spanish artist.
Mar. 15-24- Travel. Write 500 to 1500 words that document information and summarize tours to monuments and museums, guided and self-guided. (Plan to take notes and jot down time at each event, but write each night!!) Document all journal entries with time devoted to sights and museums, on your own or with a guide. Your final folder should have 3,000 words, and time dedicated to tours to monuments and museums should total 15 hours.
Apr.- Final presentation: PowerPoint or scrape book of art and monuments from Paris to the Pyrenees! |
