COURSE DESCRIPTION:

This is an introduction to oil, acrylic gauche and watercolor painting.  Emphasis is on fundamentals of media and color in the acrylic media. Painting II is a continuation of Painting I with emphasis on developing a personal style.  Exploration of oil and/or acrylic on canvas, and mural work will be explored.

OBJECTIVES:

After demonstrations, study of handouts, practice in media and recall of information shown in painting and tests, the student should be able to:

A.        Distinguish between a stretched canvas and canvas board and decide which is better for his/her own work.

B.         Mix paints with correct amount of linseed oil and turpentine (or water for gauche, watercolor and acrylics) added as vehicle for moving paint.

C.        Stretch canvases on stretcher frame.

D.        To correctly lay out a drawing on a piece of canvas.

E.         Use different paint brushes and choose best one for subject area.

F.         Put correct underpainting stain or prime (if needed) on canvas in preparation for glazing of color.

G.        Use correct drawing skills, i.e.: perspective and balanced design/composition.

H.        Add atmospheric quality to painting and effective use of color & mixing.

I.          Use transparent layers or glazes to achieve luminosity when needed.

J.          Control paints with various brushes so object appears to be made of real material it represents.

K.        Adapt hue to give intensity and saturation so the spectrum of light to shadows can be shown.

L.         Create own composition with a sketch, transfers it to canvas and paint it so it fulfills the original idea.  All work is original unless copied from dead master.

M.         Communicate an idea to others visually by exhibiting your paintings.
