DESCRIPTION:
Introduction to Pottery - The use of Pottery materials as a means of expression in handforming, wheel turning, application of glazes and firing. Lab fee.
Pottery II would continue handbuilding procedures with more emphasis on wheel turning. Lab fee.
OUTCOMES:
A. Students will be able to wedge and mix clay so it will be conducive to forming clay objects.
B. Students will be able to use principles of design and design a ceramic piece that will be pleasing aesthetically and functionally.
C. Through practice, the students will gain skills in using the pinch and coil method and will be able to form a pot suitable for firing.
D. Using the slab method, the students will be able to form a draped pot or a traditional pot using the slab technique.
E. Students will be able to use correct vocabulary describing stages and techniques used in pottery.
F. Students will be able to center and pull at least a 4" cylinder, 1/8"-1/4" thick and successfully remove from wheel.
G. Through practice, the student will be able to judge green dry stage of ceramics and fire it in the kiln using correct cones.
H. The student will be able to glaze his/her bisque-ware and fire it to correct cone.
I. Students will know and use pottery terminology and will share understanding of clay as a record of humanity.
REQUIREMENTS:
A. Each student will be expected to do
outside assigned readings. Books are
available in the library and
B. Attendance at all class meetings is expected. Absences will be noted and treated accordingly. Absences exceeding four hours (not class periods) may cause suspension.
C. Assignments will be given a date due and any work turned in after that date will be a letter grade lower per day than the work would have gotten on due day. (If an accident happens to pottery, please see Cathy Futral with evidence and explanation.)
D. Students will write a short paper on a historical aspect of Pottery or on a famous sculptor, potter, or ceramist selecting at least one of his works and critiquing it using reference materials and personal observations. The writing format will be the one used in English classes at SFCC.
E. Form, fire and glaze pottery using hand built methods of coil, slab, pinch-pull and wheel- turning techniques.
MATERIALS NEEDED: apron, plastic bags, bowls, any clay tools.
EVALUATION:
A. Two exams - Midterm and Final 20%
B. Paper 10%
C. Participation/Clean Up 10%
D. Pottery I: Completion of 2 coil pots, 1 pinch-pull, 3 slab forms
using either drapery or traditional method, 2 pieces using combination,
and 4 turned cylinder
Pottery II: Completion of 10 wheel turned pieces and 4 handbuilt pieces 60%

100 - 90 A
89 - 80 B
79 - 70 C
69 - 60 D
59 - 0 F
CONDUCT AND DECORUM: Students are expected to
conduct themselves as mature, responsible adults. Student behavior considered
by the instructor to be inappropriate may result in immediate suspension from
class. Suspended students must be accompanied by their counselor if/when they
seek readmission to the class.
ATTENDANCE AND WITHDRAW: Absences
will be noted and treated accordingly.
Students could be eligible for withdrawal if they miss more than a total
of four (6-class hours’) classes. This
syllabus serves as 1st notice; the 2nd will be by mail and may not be until
after 3rd or 4th absence.

PLAGIARISM AND CHEATING: Plagiarism is the use of another
individual’s words, phrases, sentences, or ideas (whether taken word for word,
in summary form, or as a paraphrase), without giving credit to the source from
which they come (without proper documentation). This also includes handing in
another student’s writing (original or researched) as your own. The first
offense of willful plagiarism or cheating (verified by the instructor) will
result in a grade of “F” (0 value) for the specific assignment. Second offenses
are grounds for suspension form the class with a grade of “F”. All instances of
plagiarism and other forms of cheating will be referred to the appropriate
Department Chair and the Division Dean. Research papers from other courses will
not be accepted in this course.
OBSERVANCE
OF RELIGIOUS HOLIDAYS: The students must notify the instructor at least
7 days in writing in advance of the day/s to be missed and shall have until the
next class meeting after the observance/holiday to make up missed assignments
and/or exams.
USE OF CELL PHONES, PAGERS
AND OTHER ELECTRONIC DEVICES: Students are expected to turn-off all cell phones,
pagers, and other electronic devices before
entering the classroom, and keep them in their purses, pockets or belt/pocket
sheaths. They are to be kept “out of
sight” in order to avoid causing a disruption.
An exception to this stipulation will be considered only in an emergency
situation. In these cases, the student
must verify the need to the instructor prior
to the beginning of class and must renew this exception on a
class-by-class basis. Violators will be
asked to leave the classroom for the remainder of the class that day.
NOTE: No unauthorized visitors, including children
or other members of your own family, are permitted in the classroom. All visitors must be registered with
Community Relations in Building C.
