I.                   DESCRIPTION:  This is an introduction to transparent and opaque watercolor painting.  Emphasis is on

the use of media and equipment.  Watercolor II is a continuation of Water I with emphasis on developing a personal style and creating an advanced portfolio.  (3 Hours Credit) Lab Fee.

 

II.                OBJECTIVE:  The student will be able to:

1.                  Select good quality watercolor paper for various textures (cold press to rough).  Select paints that

 will remain true in color.

2.                  Decide whether tube or cake watercolors are better suited to his/her needs.

3.                  Choose correct watercolor brushes and techniques for the effect needed.

4.                  Control washes so that darks are graduated to lights, and use water for lightening color instead

 of white.

5.                  Demonstrate wet-in-wet, wash and dry brush techniques.

6.                  Form strokes and stipple paint for tactile qualities, and use calligraphy.

7.                  Block out with mastoid the areas that the artist wishes to remain white or use negative painting

 techniques.

8.                  Create well-balanced compositions that have value contrast, focal pint and movement.

9.                  Mat and exhibit finished watercolors that will communicate to others the artist’s mood.

10.              Recognize other watercolors and appreciate the imagination and skill involved in the painting.

 

III.             WATERCOLOR PAINTING REQUIREMENTS: Students will furnish their own supplies.

 The college will provide watercolor paper.  Students will create original paintings, using their own photos

or permission of artist to copy.  Copyright laws apply to all art created.

 

IV.       SUPPLIES NEEDED:

Watercolor pad:         1          9” x 12” or 11” x 14”

Paints:             1          prangs watercolor set

1                      8-color set of tube watercolors; suggested colors are cad.

Yellow, aureole yellow, cad. Red medium, alizarin crimson or rose madder,

Cobalt blue, ultramarine blue, burnt sienna, Viridian green or Winsor green.

Brushes:                     (sable or synthetic)

                                                # 6 round and/or # 8 round, ˝” flat and 1” flat

                Odd items:                            old shirt or smock, Plastic palette, Container for water, paper towels and tote for supplies

CONDUCT AND DECORUM: Students are expected to conduct themselves as mature, responsible adults. Student behavior considered by the instructor to be inappropriate may result in immediate suspension from class. Suspended students must be accompanied by their counselor if/when they seek readmission to the class.

ATTENDANCE AND WITHDRAW: Absences will be noted and treated accordingly.  Students could be eligible for withdrawal if they miss more than a total of four (6-class hours’) classes.   This syllabus serves as 1st notice; the 2nd will be by mail and may not be until after 3rd or 4th absence.

 PLAGIARISM AND CHEATING: Plagiarism is the use of another individual’s words, phrases, sentences, or ideas (whether taken word for word, in summary form, or as a paraphrase), without giving credit to the source from which they come (without proper documentation). This also includes handing in another student’s writing (original or researched) as your own. The first offense of willful plagiarism or cheating (verified by the instructor) will result in a grade of “F” (0 value) for the specific assignment. Second offenses are grounds for suspension form the class with a grade of “F”. All instances of plagiarism and other forms of cheating will be referred to the appropriate Department Chair and the Division Dean. Research papers from other courses will not be accepted in this course.

OBSERVANCE OF RELIGIOUS HOLIDAYS: The students must notify the instructor at least 7 days in writing in advance of the day/s to be missed and shall have until the next class meeting after the observance/holiday to make up missed assignments and/or exams.

USE OF CELL PHONES, PAGERS AND OTHER ELECTRONIC DEVICES: Students are expected to turn-off all cell phones, pagers, and other electronic devices before entering the classroom, and keep them in their purses, pockets or belt/pocket sheaths.  They are to be kept “out of sight” in order to avoid causing a disruption.  An exception to this stipulation will be considered only in an emergency situation.  In these cases, the student must verify the need to the instructor prior to the beginning of class and must renew this exception on a class-by-class basis.  Violators will be asked to leave the classroom for the remainder of the class that day.

NOTE:  No unauthorized visitors, including children or other members of your own family, are permitted in the classroom.  All visitors must be registered with Community Relations in Building C.
