Federal Pell Grant (FAFSA)
The federal government's largest single grant program is the Federal Pell Grant. This is a program of gift aid based on financial need. Once a student completes the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA), a standardized federal formula is used to determine eligibility for the Pell Grant. Application results are mailed to the student and sent electronically to each school the student enters on the application.
- Tuition, fees, and other obligations designated by the student are deducted from the grant before the balance of the award is considered for the student.
- If a balance remains, a disbursement check will be made payable to the student.
- Award amounts for qualified students are based on enrollment status in each academic term, not to exceed the annual maximum.
- Students must reapply each year. This process begins each January for the upcoming academic year which begins in August. Use the FAFSA on the Web to apply for federal financial aid, including the Pell Grant: www.fafsa.ed.gov.
