Students may receive scholarships from a variety of sources. It is the responsibility of each student receiving aid through the Financial Aid Office to report all scholarships to that office, regardless of the source.

SFCC Foundation Scholarships

The South Florida Community College Foundation, Inc. (Foundation) awards numerous scholarships to students attending the College each year. Scholarship applications are available in the Financial Aid Office. Although the specific criteria vary among the types of Foundation scholarships, students enrolled at least half time in an associate degree, credit certificate, or vocational certificate program may apply for a Foundation scholarship. Some areas of emphasis in qualifying for a Foundation scholarship include academic achievement (GPA of 2.75 or higher), financial need, residence, specific high school graduation, and enrollment.

Need Based Scholarships

Need is determined by FAFSA results, PELL eligibility, and/or SFCC Financial Aid Office. Almost all scholarships require the completion of the FAFSA at www.fafsa.ed.gov and enrollment of at least 6 hours or more. Unless otherwise stated, applicants must attend SFCC. Please visit the Financial Aid Office for additional information.
A. Harrison Kosove Memorial
Applicant must demonstrate financial need. Applicant must be A.A. or A.S. degree-seeking and enrolled full time. Preference will be given to graduates of Avon Park High School and those applicants with a high GPA.
Avon Park Breakfast Rotary
Applicant must have a GPA no lower than 2.75. Applicant must be an Avon Park High School graduate. Applicant must be enrolled on a minimum of a one-half time basis in a degree-seeking program at SFCC. Preference will be given to applicants with demonstrated financial need. Preference will given to applicants with an expressed desire to pursue a degree in the natural sciences or elementary education.
Avon Park Professional Firefighters (Local 3132)
Applicant must have a GPA no lower than 2.5. Applicant must be a resident of Highlands County. Applicant must be an American citizen. Applicant must be enrolled full time in an A.S., A.A. degree or vocational certificate program. Preference will be given to student with greatest financial need. Preference will be given to applicants in one of these categories: State-certified Fire Fighter, State-certified Paramedic, or a family member of one of these categories.
Benjamin/Brown/Maxwell/AITF
Applicant must demonstrate financial need. Applicant must be a Florida resident. Applicant must be a first-time enrollee at SFCC.
Democratic Women’s Club of Highlands County
Applicant must:
  1. be a U.S. citizen.
  2. be a resident of Highlands County.
  3. be a female student enrolled at SFCC.
  4. be a registered Democrat.
  5. enrolled in a degree or vocational certificate program in Nursing or Criminal Justice.
  6. have a GPA of 2.75 or higher in high school and to date if in college.
  7. demonstrate financial need.
  8. agree to attend a meeting of the Highlands County Democratic Women’s Club and to provide an update on her college program progress.
Duncan Endowed Scholarship
Applicant must demonstrate financial need. Applicants must be residents of the SFCC service district. Preference will be given to students recommended by members of the Robert and Caroline Duncan Family. Applicants must display evidence of academic promise as substantiated by a “C” or better cumulative average on all high school work or college work.
Frances and Richard Knapp
Applicant must demonstrate financial need and GPA no lower than 2.75. Applicant must be enrolled full time.
Fred E. Pennel Memorial
Applicant must demonstrate financial need and GPA no lower than C+. Applicant must be enrolled on a minimum of one-half time basis. Preference will be given to those with a grade between C+ and B-.
General Nursing Endowment
Applicant must demonstrate financial need. Applicant must be enrolled as a full-time nursing student at SFCC. Preference will be given to residents of the SFCC service area.
George S. Buck
Applicant must demonstrate financial need and GPA no lower than 2.0. Applicant must be resident of Highlands County and under the age of 21. Applicant must be enrolled full time.
Helping Hearts and Hands
Applicant must demonstrate financial need. Applicant must be a resident of the SFCC service area. Applicant must be enrolled in any degree or certificate program, and enrolled on a minimum of one-half time basis. Preference will be given to Highlands County residents and those applicants with a high GPA.
Highlands Independent Bank
Applicant must have a GPA no lower than 2.5. Applicant must be a resident of the SFCC service area. Applicant must be enrolled on a minimum of a one-half time basis in a degree or vocational certificate program. Preference will be given to applicant with demonstrated financial need.
Knights of Columbus Council 5441 Endowed
Applicant must have a GPA no lower than 2.5. Applicant must be a permanent resident of Highlands County. Applicant must be enrolled on a minimum of a one-half time basis in a program (vocational or academic) offered by SFCC. Preference will be given to applicant with demonstrated financial need. Preference will be given to applicants who are family members of Knights or of ancillary organizations.
Robert and Caroline Duncan Academic Football Scholarship
Applicant must demonstrate financial need. Applicant must be graduates of Avon Park High School who competed in varsity football during their senior year. Preference will be given to applicants with a cumulative grade point average in all high school work between 2.5 and 2.99. Preference will be given to minorities.
Robert J. and Jane H. Barben Family
Applicant must be a resident of the SFCC service area. Applicant must be A.A. or A.S. degree-seeking and enrolled full time. Preference will be given to applicants with demonstrated financial need, with a GPA of 2.75 or greater, or applicants enrolled in a citrus or agriculture program.
Rotary Club of Highlands County
Applicant must have a GPA no lower than 2.75. Applicant must be a resident of Highlands County. Applicant must be enrolled a minimum of one-half time basis in a degree or vocational certificate program. Preference will be given to applicant with demonstrated financial need. Recipients must agree to attend a meeting of the Rotary Club and provide an update on their college program.
Sebring Optimist Club Vocational
Applicant must demonstrate financial need. Applicant must be a resident of the SFCC service area. Applicant must be between the ages of 17 and 24. Applicant must be enrolled at least one-half time in a vocational program. Preference will be given to residents of Highlands County. Scholarship is not available to students intending to pursue a four-year baccalaureate degree.
Thomas P. Clinard Nursing
Applicant must demonstrate financial need. Applicant must be a resident of the SFCC service area. Applicant must be accepted as a full-time nursing student at SFCC. Applicant must profess a “good-faith” intent to seek employment in Highlands County upon graduation.
Wanda Daymon Memorial
Applicant must demonstrate financial need and GPA between 2.0 and 2.75.
West Coast District Dental Association
Applicant must have a GPA no lower than 2.75. Applicant must be a resident of the SFCC service area. Applicant must be enrolled on a full-time basis in one of the dental programs at SFCC. Preference will be given to applicants with demonstrated financial need.


Merit Based Scholarships

AAUW 2nd Chance Book
Applicant must have a GPA no lower than 3.0. Applicant must intend to continue on for a B.A. or B.S. degree. Applicant must be female. Preference will be given to applicants over the age of 25.
Barbara J. Kurtz Nursing
Applicant must have a GPA no lower than B in high school and not lower than 3.0 at SFCC. Applicant must be a resident of the SFCC service area. Applicant must be A.S. in Nursing degree-seeking or certificate in Practical Nursing seeking who intends to maintain enrollment on a full-time basis at SFCC.
Betty B. Wild
Applicant must be a resident of the SFCC service area. Applicant must be A.A. or A.S. degree-seeking and enrolled on a minimum of one-half time basis. Preference will be given to applicant with a high GPA.
C. Elton and Norma D. Crews
Applicant must provide evidence of academic promise. Applicant must be a resident of Highlands County and a graduate of Avon Park High School. Applicant must be A.A. or A.S. degree-seeking and enrolled full-time.
Charles and Tami Cullens Endowed
Applicant must provide evidence of academic promise. Applicant must be a resident of the SFCC service area. Applicant must be A.A. or A.S. degree-seeking and enrolled on a minimum of one-half time basis. Preference will be given to applicants intending to major in citrus/agriculture.
Edward K. Roberts Honors Program
Applicants must be accepted into the Honors Program of SFCC. Applicants must express a good faith intent to graduate from the SFCC Honors Program. Preference will be given to permanent residents of the SFCC service area. Preference will be given to applicants who are A.A. or A.S. degree-seeking and enrolled on a minimum of one-half time basis.
George W. Smoot and Louise O’Neal Smoot
Applicant must have a grade no lower than B. Applicant must be a resident of Highlands County or Bartow, Fla. Applicant must be A.A. or A.S. degree-seeking and enrolled on a full-time basis.
Joseph E. Johnston/Bette L. McDearman Memorial
Applicant must have a grade no lower than B in high school and not lower than 3.0 at SFCC. Applicant must be a resident of the SFCC service area. Applicant must be A.A. or A.S. degree-seeking who intends to maintain enrollment on a full-time basis at SFCC.
Lake Placid Noon Rotary Club
Applicant must have a grade no lower than B. Applicant must be A.A. or A.S. degree-seeking and enrolled on a minimum of one-half time basis. Applicants must be permanent residents of Lake Placid, Fla. Preference will be given to applicant with demonstrated financial need. Preference will be given to Lake Placid High School graduates. Recipients may be asked to attend a meeting of the Rotary Club and provide an update on their college program.
Phi Theta Kappa (Becci Davis) Tau Epsilon Chapter
Applicant must have a GPA no lower than 3.25 on all work completed at SFCC. Applicant must be a Phi Theta Kappa member. Applicant must have complete 12 credit hours on campus at SFCC. Applicant must be enrolled full time in an approved A.A. or A.S. degree program. Applicant will submit an original essay of not more than 250 words on how the applicant has contributed to the purpose of Phi Theta Kappa.
SFCC Board of Trustees Honor Scholar Award
Award will be given to top district high school graduate of the current year that attends SFCC. Applicant must be enrolled on a full-time basis.
The Military Officers Association of America JROTC
Applicant must have a GPA no lower than 2.5 overall and 3.0 in JROTC. Applicant must be enrolled in SFCC. Applicant must: be of high moral character; show high level of loyalty to their unit, school and country; show exceptional potential for military leadership; have positive attitude toward the Junior ROTC or CAP unit and if JROTC must have a minimum of 3 JROTC credits; demonstrate potential for growth in the areas of responsibility, productivity and adaptability. Applicants should: demonstrate outstanding personal appearance, posture and grooming; possess attributes of initiative, sound judgment, self-confidence and courtesy.
Vinod C. Thakkar Nursing
Recipient must be enrolled in one of the nursing programs at SFCC. Preference will be given to recipients selected by director of the Nursing Program. Recipients will be the highest ranking in their respective programs.


Need and Merit Based Scholarships

Applicant must demonstrate financial need and GPA no lower than 2.0 on college courses and 3.0 on Fine Arts courses. Applicant must be resident of Avon Park. Applicant must be A.A. degree-seeking, intending to pursue fine arts as a career.
Avon Park Board of Realtors
Applicant must demonstrate financial need and academic promise. Applicant must be a Florida resident. Applicant must be A.A. or A.S. degree-seeking and enrolled full-time. Preference will be given to residents of the Avon Park area.
Ben Hill Griffin Cinco de Mayo
Applicant must demonstrate financial need. Applicant must have a GPA no lower than a 3.0 at one of the service area high schools. Applicant must be enrolled full-time. Applicant must be a direct descendent of a Mexican farmworker family. Applicant must be willing to work at least 20 hours of community service each year at Sonshine House of Avon Park.
Hanford D. Brace
Applicant must demonstrate financial need and GPA no lower than 3.0. Applicant must be enrolled full-time. Preference will be given to music majors, recent high school graduates, or SFCC Elderhostel participants.
Hazel and Chester Connerly
Applicant must demonstrate financial need and have B or better average. Applicant must be a resident of Hardee County and a Hardee Senior High Graduate. Applicant must be A.A. or A.S. degree-seeking and enrolled full-time.
Hibiscus Garden Club
Applicant must be a Florida resident. Applicant must be an Avon Park High School graduate. Preference will be given to applicants with demonstrated financial need, who are in the second year of a horticulture or agriculture program and have a GPA no lower than B.
Highlands County Citrus Growers Association
Applicant must demonstrate financial need and grade no lower than B. Preference will be given to A.A. or A.S. degree-seeking applicants who are enrolled full-time with a declared major in citrus/agricultural science.
Justin N. Patel Memorial
Applicant must demonstrate financial need and grade no lower than B. Applicant must be enrolled full time in an A.S. or A.A. degree program.
Larry Macbeth Memorial
Applicant must demonstrate financial need and grade no lower than B. Applicant must be resident of Highlands County. Applicant must be enrolled full-time in an A.S. or A.A. degree program. Preference will be given to recent graduates of Sebring High School.
Pushpaben M. Joshi Memorial
Applicant must demonstrate financial need and grade no lower than B. Applicant must be A.A. or A.S. degree-seeking and enrolled full-time.
Ralph H. Hartt Memorial
Applicants must be residents of the SFCC service area. Applicants must be enrolled at SFCC on a minimum of one-half time basis. Preference will be given to applicants with demonstrated financial need, have a high GPA, or are pursuing careers in agriculture, particularly citrus.
Snyder/Singletary Memorial
Applicant must demonstrate financial need and academic promise. Applicant must be resident of SFCC service area. Applicants must be enrolled full or part time at SFCC. Preference will be given to Highlands County residents, applicants who do not qualify for other types of financial aid, or students enrolled in the Criminology Program.
Steven Martin Durrance
Applicant must demonstrate financial need and grade no lower than B. Applicant must be a resident of Hardee County and a Hardee Senior High Graduate. Applicant must be A.A. or A.S. degree-seeking and enrolled full time.
SunTrust
Applicant must be A.A. or A.S. degree-seeking and enrolled full-time. Preference will be given to applicants with demonstrated financial need, with a high GPA.
The Forty and Eight “Black Sheep” Nursing
Applicant must demonstrate financial need and GPA no lower than 3.0. Applicant must reside in Highlands County. Applicant must be accepted into and enrolled full time in one of the formal nursing programs at SFCC. Applicant must agree to work in a medical field in Highlands County for one year upon completion of courses. Preference will be given to veterans or their family members.
The Forty and Eight Nursing
Applicant must be accepted into one of the nursing programs at SFCC. Applicant must be enrolled on a minimum of one-half time basis in their respective program.
Zenon C. R. Hansen Memorial
Applicant must demonstrate financial need and grade no lower than B. Applicant must be enrolled full-time in an AA degree program. Preference will be given to single females and displaced homemakers, individuals ages 25 – 45, or any male who has achieved the rank of Eagle Scout.

African-American/Willie J. Dennard, Jr.
Applicant must demonstrate financial need and GPA no lower than 2.75. Applicant must be resident of SFCC service area. Applicant must be racial minority. Applicant must be A.A. or A.S. degree-seeking and enrolled full time.
Avon Park High School JROTC
Applicants must be enrolled at SFCC on a full-time basis. Applicants must be in good standing in the AFJROTC program at Avon Park High School.
Avon Park Noon Rotary
Applicants must be enrolled, or accepted for enrollment, on a minimum of a one-half time basis in any program of study at SFCC. Applicants must be residents of the SFCC service district with preference given to graduates of Avon Park High School or Walker Memorial Academy. Applicants must demonstrate financial need as determined by the SFCC Financial Aid Office. Applicants must have a minimum GPA of 2.50 on all past high school or college work attempted.
Bank of America Dream Makers
Applicant must have a GPA no lower than 2.75. Open to any SFCC student. Preference will be given to applicants demonstrating greatest financial need.
Ben Hill Griffin, Jr. Endowed General

Ben Hill Griffin, Jr. Endowed Music
Applicant must be enrolled full-time. Recommendations will be made based on a performance audition. Performance, cooperation and attendance standards apply to recipients.
Bill and Barbara Sachsenmaier
Applicant must be a resident of the SFCC service area. Applicant must be enrolled full time in a degree or certificate program at SFCC. Preference will be given to applicants who are citrus majors, show academic promise or with demonstrated financial need.
Bill and Lisa Jarrett Athlete Housing
This scholarship is available to the male and female athletes with the highest GPA who reside in the Jacaranda Residence Facility. Two scholarships will be given each Fall and Winter semester (one male one female).
Bill Blanding Memorial
Applicant must have a GPA no lower than C. Applicant must be a resident of Highlands County. Applicant must be Vocational Certificate, A.A. or A.S. degree-seeking and enrolled full-time. Applicant must be 25 years of age or younger. Applicant must be recommended by at least two adults who can certify to character and need. Preference will be given to qualified African-American applicant.
Bill Jarrett Automotive – Automotive Service and Auto Body Repair and Refinishing
Applicant must be enrolled in respective vocational program. Applicant must be recommended by an SFCC instructor of the respective program. Applicant must agree to an interview if requested by instructor. Preference will be given to applicants with demonstrated financial need and a strong commitment to program completion.
Brain Bowl
Applicants must be members of the Brain Bowl Team. Applicants must participate in Brain Bowl Competitions.
Catherine P. Cornelius Endowed
Applicant must be a graduate of SFCC. Applicant must be enrolled in a Baccalaureate program at the SFCC University Center. Preference will be given to applicants with demonstrated financial need.
David Wyche Memorial
No specific criteria established.
DeSoto County Special
Applicant must be a resident of DeSoto County. Applicant must be enrolled on a minimum of one-half time basis at SFCC. Preference will be given to applicants with demonstrated financial need.
Dr. Harold E. Henderson Memorial
Applicant must have a GPA no lower than C. Applicant must be a resident of the SFCC service area. Applicant must be A.A. or A.S. degree-seeking and enrolled on a full-time basis. Preference will be given to residents of Hardee County.
Ed Morgan
Applicant must be enrolled at SFCC on at least a one-half time basis. Preference will be given to applicants with an interest in the natural or physical sciences.
First Generation in College
Applicant must be of the first generation in their family to attend College.
Florida Association of Community Colleges
Open to all students. Preference will be given to members of FACC.
Gwen Sanders-Hill Memorial
Open to all applicants.
Heacock
Open to all SFCC students. Preference will be given to applicants with demonstrated financial need.
Highlands County Bar Association (in memory of Jani Branham)
Applicant must be resident of Highlands County. Applicant must have expressed interest in legal studies. The Highlands County Bas Association may require an essay be submitted.
James Fentress Memorial
Applicant must demonstrate financial need and have GPA no lower than 2.5. Applicant must be a Florida resident. Applicant must be A.A. or A.S. degree-seeking and enrolled full-time. Preference will be given to residents of Lake Placid, Fla, to children of Consolidated Tomoka employees, or agriculture majors.
Joe L. and Pat Davis
Applicant must demonstrate financial need and GPA no lower than C. Applicant must be resident of SFCC service Area. Applicant must be AA or AS degree-seeking and enrolled full-time. Preference will be given to Agriculture majors or to those not eligible for other aid.
Joy S. Y. Chen Memorial
Applicant must have a GPA no lower than 3.0. Applicant must be A.A. or A.S. degree-seeking and enrolled on a minimum of one-half time basis. Applicant must be a full-time or part-time employee of Central Florida Health Care Corporation. Preference will be given to applicant with demonstrated financial need.
Lee R. Cullens Memorial Athletic Housing
Applicants must be a member of an SFCC intercollegiate athletic team. Applicant must be A.A. or A.S. degree-seeking and enrolled on a minimum of one-half time basis.
Leotis McNeil Memorial
Applicant must demonstrate financial need and GPA no lower than 2.75. Applicant must have been a resident of Highlands County for at least four years, and graduated from a local high school. Applicant must be of African-American ancestry. Applicant must be A.A. degree-seeking and enrolled full-time. Preference will be given to incoming freshmen.
Miriah Brenner Memorial
Applicant must be attending SFCC on at least a one-half time basis. Preference will be given to second year students majoring in the Fine Arts.
Patrick and Mercedes Carruthers African-American
Applicant must demonstrate financial need and GPA no lower than 2.65. Applicant must be an African-American who was born, raised and is living in Highlands County. Applicant must be degree- or vocational certificate-seeking, and enrolled on a minimum of one-half time basis.
Peace River Electric Cooperative
Applicant must be enrolled in the SFCC Electric Lineman Distribution Program. Preference will be given to applicants willing to work for an electric cooperative. Awards tied to internships at PRECO.
Progress Energy/Florida Power Electrical Lineman
Applicant must be enrolled in the SFCC Electric Lineman Distribution Program. Applicants must not be current employees of any industry agency other than Florida Power or its affiliates. Preference will be given to applicants who have completed their first year of study through a regular or dual-enrollment program. Preference will be given to applicants with demonstrated financial need or who have a GPA not lower than 3.0.
Sebring Noon Rotary Club Education
Open to all students.
Sebring Sunrise Rotary Club
Applicant must have a GPA no lower than 2.5. Applicant must be a resident of the SFCC service area. Applicant must be seeking an A.A., A.S., or A.A.S. degree, or completion of any course of study who intends to maintain full time enrollment at SFCC.
SFCC Artist Series Music
Applicant must be enrolled at least one-half time in a degree-seeking program. Preference will be given to applicants with demonstrated financial need. Performance, cooperation and attendance standards apply to recipients.
SFCC Career Employees Council
Applicant must have a GPA no lower than 2.75. Applicants must be current SFCC Career Employees or the dependent of current or retired Career Employees. Preference will be given to applicants with demonstrated financial need.
SFCC General
No specific criteria established.
SFCC Law Enforcement
Applicants must be female, over the age of 19, a U.S. citizen and who posses a valid Florida driver’s license. Applicant must make a good faith agreement to seek employment with the Highlands County, Florida Sheriff’s Office.
Smokey Padgett Memorial
Open to all students of SFCC.
The Helios Education Foundation First Generation in College
Applicant must be of the first generation in their family to attend college as defined by SFCC. Applicant must be in good standing with the college. Preference will be given to applicants majoring in elementary education. This is a “last dollar assistance” after all other scholarships the applicant is eligible for are disbursed.
Thomas Burch and Carolyn P. Cornelius Memorial
No specific criteria established.
Wanda Daymon Junior Achievement/Student of the Year
Applicants must be participants of Highlands County Junior Achievement (JA) activities. Applicants will be judged on JA class involvement, cover letter, resume, and interview. Student need not attend SFCC.
Wauchula Women’s Club
Applicant must demonstrate financial need and GPA no lower than 2.65. Applicants must not be eligible for Pell Grants. Applicant must be a resident of Hardee County and have graduated from Hardee Senior High within the last five years. Applicant must be A.A. or A.S. degree-seeking and enrolled full-time. Preference will be given to applicants with a letter of recommendation from the Wauchula Women’s Club; strong preference will be given to female applicants. Applicant may not be recipient of an SFCC top 10 percent scholarship.
