What is the Career Academy at SFSC?

The Career Academy at SFSC is an entire learning experience on the SFSC Highlands Campus. You’ll attend high school classes, taught by high school instructors, during one half of the day. During the other half of the day, you’ll attend college-level classes alongside other college students.

SUPPORT SERVICES

An important aspect of the Career Academy at SFSC is the variety of services provided to enable students to gain the most from the Career Academy experience.
  • ADVISING AND COUNSELING
Guidance services will be available through SFSC, academy faculty and staff, and the school of record. Students will remain with the original guidance counselor from their school of record. The Career Academy will set up visits for guidance counselors to meet with students at the Career Academy on the SFSC Highlands Campus. Students must fill out a pre-arranged absence form to visit a high school guidance counselor at their school of record during the school day.
  • COLLEGE INFORMATION
Current college catalogs, career information, and scholarship information are readily available for student use.
  • LIBRARY SERVICES
Students will have full access to SFSC library services. The SFSC Highlands Campus library, housed on the upper floor of the Learning Resource Center (LRC), is open 8 a.m. - 9:30 p.m. Monday through Thursday; 8 a.m. - 4 p.m., Friday; and 2 - 6 p.m. Sunday. With qualified staff ready to help, this full-service facility houses standard volumes together with newspapers, journals, and thousands of e-books. In addition, 14 computer stations are loaded with an array of search engines for students' personal use.
  • TUTORING AND LEARNING CENTER (TLC)
The TLC is situated on the ground floor of the LRC. Three fully staffed computer labs have state-of-the-art programs to assist with math, reading/writing, and general studies. The TLC is a place where students can get help from expert faculty and staff, free of charge. The TLC is open 8 a.m. - 8 p.m., Monday through Thursday, and 8 a.m. - 4 p.m., Fridays.
  • FOOD SERVICE
Students may purchase meals through the school district or the SFSC Cafeteria. Qualifications for meal benefits will be the same as the school of record and will only apply to school district provided meals. Breakfast will be provided each morning in the Career Academy cafeteria at no charge to the student.
  • BUS TRANSPORTATION AND SCHEDULE
Career Academy designated bus stops will serve the three main communities in Highlands County – Avon Park, Sebring, and Lake Placid. Buses will pick up students at these three central locations and transport them directly to the Career Academy at SFSC. These bus routes will not stop at the regular high schools in the county. Due to the starting times of classes, the pick up times may be earlier than the high school bus routes. Students should not ride a bus to their school of record. If the student chooses to use HCSB transportation services, then he/she will need to use the established bus routes specifically designed for the Career Academy.
  • ON-CAMPUS PARKING POLICIES
Parking on the Career Academy at SFSC campus is restricted to faculty, staff, Career Academy at SFSC students (10th through 12th graders), parents, and authorized visitors. Students wishing to park on campus must complete a SBHC Random Drug Testing Form, submit proof of insurance, and a vehicle registration. Career Academy at SFSC students must display SFSC parking decals on their vehicles.
