AVON PARK, Fla.–Feb. 3, 2015–Family activities will be the focus of South Florida State College’s 50th Anniversary Kick-off Celebration, on Saturday, Feb. 14, 11 a.m.-2 p.m., Panther Field, SFSC Highlands Campus, Avon Park.

            Employees of the college and SFSC Foundation, Inc. invite students, alumni, and members of the community to take part in this free kick-off celebration. The celebration features an SFSC Panther Baseball doubleheader against Sante Fe College, a reunion of SFSC’s cheerleaders, and children’s activities–a bounce house, face painting, and an obstacle course. Wander by the Welcome tent for SFSC apparel and other items, college program information, or if you need directions. Barbecue from Cowpoke’s Watering Hole will be available: $10 for adults, $5 for children under 12. Tickets for barbecue can be purchased in advance at the Sebring Chamber of Commerce; Sherwin-Williams, 1132 Lakeview Drive, Sebring; Avon Park Chamber of Commerce; the SFSC Foundation, Inc., Hotel Jacaranda, Avon Park; or the SFSC Cashier’s Office, Building B, Highlands Campus, Avon Park.

Year-long Celebration

            SFSC will present other 50th anniversary events throughout 2015. All members of the community are invited to participate in these events as SFSC celebrates the success of the college’s first 50 years, and as we look to the future and what the next 50 years will bring.  Sponsors for the year-long 50th anniversary are the Sebring News Sun, Dental Care of Mid-Florida, and Harbor Community Bank. DeSoto Family Fun Day, Saturday, Feb. 7, 9 a.m.-3 p.m., SFSC DeSoto Campus, Arcadia. The Family Fun Day features youth activities, fine art, fine crafts, photography, food, and entertainment and is being held in conjunction with the third annual Rio de la Paz Festival and Art of the River. Coming Home, Thursday, Oct. 15, Museum of Florida Art and Culture (MOFAC), Highlands Campus, Avon Park. An exhibition of artwork by SFSC alumni. 

Masquerade Ball, Saturday, Oct. 24, Hotel Jacaranda, Avon Park.  The Hotel Jacaranda will be transformed into a Venetian Masquerade.

            As part of its 50th anniversary, SFSC wants to hear what you think was important about your days as a student or employee. Tell us your story. It could be a fond memory about people or events taking place in the classroom, at a sporting event, or just around campus. It could be a bit of personal history that you’d like to share.

            Current students and employees—who are still making history—are invited to take part in the collection of stories as well. What does your SFSC experience mean to you now? Some of the tales may be published online.
