TRiO Student Support Services is a federal program that offers services to help participants succeed in college and graduate on a timely basis. Our purpose is to increase retention, graduation, and transfer rates among our students. All services are free and include: academic tutoring; advice and assistance in post-secondary course selection; information on student financial aid programs and scholarships; assistance in completing the Free Application for Federal Student Aid; education services designed to improve the financial literacy; activities to assist students enrolled in two-year institutions of higher education in applying for admission to, and obtaining financial assistance for enrollment in, a four-year program of post-secondary education; individualized advising for personal, career, and academic matters; and, information, activities, and instruction designed to acquaint students with the range of career options available to students.
No. TRiO serves eligible students only. The TRiO program is open to students who are currently enrolled at SFSC and are first generation college students (neither parent(s)/guardian(s) have earned a bachelor’s degree), meet federal income guidelines, and/or have a documented disability. Additionally, students must be a U.S. citizen (or national of the United States or meets the residency requirements for Federal Student Financial Assistance).
The program is an exclusive program and can only serve 160 students each academic year. Selection is on a first-come, first-served basis, so do not hesitate to apply.
TRiO provides a personal college “safety net” from the freshman year through graduation. The program can help you build on your strengths and address your areas of concern. By becoming a participant, you will gain access to services and opportunities not available to other students on campus.
It is expected that you will be committed to earning your degree and that you will take advantage of TRiO services that meet your academic needs. Additionally, TRiO participants are required to meet with their success coach three times each term, complete one workshop, and complete one financial literacy module/assignment.
Yes! TRiO makes the transition smoother by offering one-on-one advising and career counseling as well as workshops on managing your time efficiently, getting along with instructors, financing your education, planning your four-year degree and beyond, and many other topics.
Absolutely! TRiO offers students supplemental academic advising as well as career counseling. TRiO can help you to determine a program that best suits you interests, strengths, and long-term plans, then help you to map out which courses you need and when to take them.
It depends on which services you decide to use. It can take as little as a few hours to several hours each term. That is up to you.
No. All services are provided free of charge.
It is expected that you will remain in the program until you graduate.
