Avon Park, Fla. – April 1, 2019 – A Poetry SLAM and Open Mic Night is planned for Tuesday, April 16 at 5:30 p.m. to mark the South Florida State College Library’s annual celebration of National Poetry Month. While the Library has hosted open mic nights since 2014 for National Poetry Month, this year marks the first Poetry SLAM.

“There’s a lot of student interest in the performance aspects of poetry. Slam poetry is not just about the words; it’s about the delivery, the performance, and the energy between the performer and the audience,” said Claire A. Miller, SFSC librarian. “We’re excited to see what our readers bring to our poetry slam. At the same time, we also want to welcome our more traditional readers too, so calling it a ‘Poetry Slam and Open Mic Night’ seemed like the most welcoming option.”

Performers and/or readers are asked to keep their poems family friendly and short; Miller recommends about three minutes or less. Everyone is welcome to read and light refreshments will be provided. The event starts at 5:30 p.m. on the first floor of Building Y on the Highlands Campus.

In addition, SFSC Library will celebrate National Poem in Your Pocket Day on Thursday, April 18. This national celebration, sponsored since 2008 by the Academy of American Poets, encourages people to select a poem, carry it with them, and share it with others. SFSC Library will distribute poem bookmarks all month long.
