Career Exploration and Career Development Services

The Career Development Center can help you discover and plan for a career that interests you through this process:

  1. Self-Assessment: Identify your knowledge, interests, skills, and workplace values. List your strengths and weaknesses. Think about the factors that will impact your satisfaction with your career and your life.
  2. Explore Your Options: Investigate careers that match your knowledge, interests, skills, and values. Learn about the job outlook, work characteristics, and advantages and disadvantages of careers. Gain first-hand experience in careers of interest through job shadowing, volunteering, informational interviews, internships, or cooperative learning (co-op) experiences.
  3. Make Decisions: Select a career direction, then identify the education and training you need to reach your goal. Learn more about decision-making styles and setting goals.
  4. Prepare for Your Job Search: Create a cover letter, resume, or portfolio and prepare for job interviews. Learn effective strategies for job hunting.
  5. Search for Jobs: Explore local, statewide, and national job sites to identify job openings of interest. Learn about job searching strategies, negotiating salaries, and relocating.
  6. Manage Your Career: Discover the secrets to long term on-the-job happiness and career satisfaction.

Kuder Journey Computerized Career Self-Assessment

The Kuder Journey is a computer-based career self-assessment program. By answering a series of questions, you identify jobs that interest you, the skills you are confident you can develop, and your workplace values. You receive a list of potential careers that reflect your responses and access an extensive database of career information.

As you research careers, you will learn about:

  • Duties and responsibilities
  • Working conditions and work settings
  • Required education and training
  • Opportunities for advancement
  • Job outlook and earnings

FloridaShines offers a wealth of free resources to college-bound students. You can compare colleges, access career planning resources, view college catalogs, apply for admission and financial aid, review academic transcripts. Career Counseling

Talk to an SFSC career counselor about your goals and the results of your career assessments. The counselor can help you identify possible careers and show you how to reach your goals through one of SFSC’s educational programs. Day and evening appointments are available for individuals and family groups.

Experiential Learning

Learn through experience by observing career professionals in your areas of interest through volunteering, internships and cooperative learning (co-op). Co-op courses provide college credit. The Career Development Center can help you locate a placement that reflects your interests.

Students and New Graduates

When you are ready to transfer to another college or university, the Career Development Center can help you create the materials you may need to include with your application:
